Jacks Pass and Jollies Pass is a scenic loop route and a must do for anyone wanting to appreciate Hanmer for more than just it's commercialized charms.
We travel over one pass and down to the Clarence River, with a stop along the banks to admire the breathtaking scenery. This is a perfect adventure for those with limited time, roughly 1 hour return.

On the boundary between Molesworth and St James Conservation Area, Lake Tennyson's combination of water, forest, high mountains, tussock, and scree creates a scenic highlight.
The 239 hectare lake is dammed behind glacial moraines.
This is a popular area for camping with shelter and toilets available.

From the Lake Tennyson turn off we travel another 12km to the top of Island Saddle at 1347m above sea level, the highest publicly accessed road. This alpine pass straddles the boundary between Marlborough and Canterbury. We follow the headwaters of the Wairau River for approximately 11km until we get to Sedgemere Lakes.
The lakes are regularly frequented by waders and water foul: Pied Stilt, Pied Oyster Catcher, Black-Fronted Tern, Banded Dotterel and Grey Duck. This is also an important moulting area for Paradise Shelduck.

Molesworth Recreation Reserve

Molesworth is a land of extremes. This vast landscape contains scree-scarred mountains, wide river valleys, and tussock slopes. We drive through Molesworth on the Acheron Road and enjoy lunch at the Cobb Cottage.
At 180,787ha Molesworth is New Zealand's largest farm. It has New Zealand's largest herd of beef cattle, up to 10,000. Weather ranges from scorching summers to freezing snowy winters.
